What is special about Iyengar Yoga?
Iyengar yoga is a dynamic form of classical Hatha Yoga which strengthens, realigns and balances the energy flow of body and mind. While his teachings are deeply grounded in the ancient yoga tradition, his own intense personal practice and over fifty years of teaching have produced some significant innovations.
Among the most noteworthy of these are:
- emphasis on correct alignment in every asana or posture
- holding the posture for a few minutes to experience its effects
- use of props, such as the wall, wooden blocks, belts, pillows, blankets, chairs and ropes to help the less flexible experience the beneficial effects of the postures
- specific sequencing of postures
- careful individualised adjustments
- deep relaxation to conclude every session.
